How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Installing Printer Drivers

Windows 11 features a highly aggressive plug-and-play system. If you connect a new printer via USB or connect to a network that has a shared printer, Windows will instantly attempt to download and install a driver for it from Microsoft’s servers. It often installs basic, generic drivers that overwrite the full-featured manufacturer drivers you may have manually installed.

If you work in a corporate environment with dozens of network printers, or if you prefer to manually install the official driver software directly from HP or Canon, this automatic installation behaviour is a massive headache. You can instruct Windows to completely ignore new hardware and stop downloading drivers automatically.

How to Stop Automatic Printer Driver Installations

You can turn off automatic device setup through the classic Advanced System Settings panel.

  1. Click the Start button, type Change device installation settings, and press Enter.
  2. A small, classic Windows dialogue box titled “Device Installation Settings” will appear.
  3. The prompt will ask: “Do you want to automatically download manufacturers’ apps and custom icons available for your devices?”
  4. Select the radio button next to No (your device might not work as expected).
  5. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the window (you may need administrator privileges to do this).

With this setting disabled, Windows 11 will no longer hijack the driver installation process. When you connect a new printer, it will remain unrecognized in your Device Manager until you manually download and run the official installer provided by the printer manufacturer.
