macOS includes a deeply ingrained accessibility feature designed to help visually impaired users magnify the screen. If you hold down the Control key (Ctrl) on your keyboard and accidentally slide two fingers up your trackpad (or roll the scroll wheel on your mouse), the entire Mac screen will instantly and aggressively zoom in, blowing up the pixels and hiding the edges of your desktop.
If you do not need screen magnification, this feature is incredibly annoying. Programmers, gamers, and graphic designers frequently use the Control key in combination with the mouse for specific shortcuts. Accidentally triggering the system-wide zoom completely breaks your concentration and forces you to scramble to scroll back down to return the screen to normal.
You can completely disable this shortcut to prevent your screen from randomly zooming in.
How to Disable the Ctrl + Scroll Zoom Shortcut
This keyboard-and-mouse combo is managed in the Accessibility settings.
- Open the System Settings (or System Preferences) via the Apple Logo in the top-left menu bar.
- Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Accessibility.
- In the right pane, click on Zoom.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.

Your Mac is now immune to accidental trackpad zooming. You can safely hold the Control key and scroll furiously in your favorite applications without your entire desktop violently expanding.
