By default, Windows 11 forces all PDF files to open in Microsoft Edge. While Edge is a capable basic reader, you might prefer the advanced editing tools, signature features, and familiar interface of dedicated software like Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit PDF Editor. Changing the default app saves you from having to right-click and choose “Open With” every single time.
Method 1: Using the File Context Menu (Fastest)
The quickest way to change this setting is directly from a PDF file on your computer.
- Find any PDF file on your desktop or in your Documents folder.
- Right-click the file.
- Hover your mouse over Open with, then click Choose another app from the slide-out menu.
- A pop-up window will list several programs. Click on the app you want to use (like Adobe Acrobat). If you don’t see it, scroll down and click “Choose an app on your PC” to find the `.exe` file.
- Crucial Step: Before clicking OK, make sure to check the box at the bottom that says “Always use this app to open .pdf files.”
- Click OK. Every PDF on your PC will instantly change to show the icon of your new default program.
Method 2: Using the Windows Settings App
If you don’t have a PDF file handy, you can change the default behavior through the system settings.
- Open the Start Menu and click the gear icon to open Settings (or press Windows Key + I).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Apps.
- Click on Default apps on the right side.
- At the top of the page, there is a search bar labeled “Set a default for a file type or link type.” Type
.pdfinto the box and press Enter. - The current default app (likely Microsoft Edge) will appear. Click on it.
- A list of installed applications will pop up. Select your preferred PDF reader and click Set default.
