The Scrolling Nightmare
In Windows 11, the File Explorer’s left-hand navigation pane is designed to help you quickly jump between drives and major directories. By default, Windows 11 includes a feature called “Expand to open folder.” When this is active, the navigation pane automatically mirrors exactly where you are in the main window. If you drill down ten folders deep into a project directory, the left sidebar will automatically expand all ten of those folders. If you work with complex, deeply nested directory structures, this automatic expansion turns the left pane into an infinitely long, chaotic list that requires constant scrolling just to find your main C: Drive or standard Quick Access shortcuts.
Freezing the Navigation Pane
To keep your sidebar clean and predictable, and to stop Windows 11 from automatically expanding folders in the File Explorer navigation pane, you must disable the tracking feature in the Folder Options menu.
Open File Explorer (Windows key + E). In the command bar at the very top of the window, click on the three horizontal dots (…) to open the “See more” menu. From the dropdown list, select Options. A small “Folder Options” dialogue box will appear. Click on the View tab at the top of this box. Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the “Advanced settings” list until you find a section titled Navigation pane. Under this header, locate the checkbox labeled Expand to open folder. Click this checkbox to uncheck it. Click Apply, then click OK to close the window. The navigation pane will now remain entirely static; it will only expand or collapse when you explicitly click the small arrows next to a folder name.
