The Persistent Connection
Windows 11 features native support for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), allowing you to securely connect to a corporate intranet or mask your traffic on public Wi-Fi. During the initial setup of a VPN profile, Windows offers a feature often labelled as “Connect automatically” or “Allow this network to be used for VPN auto-triggering.” If enabled, Windows will constantly attempt to establish the secure tunnel whenever it detects network activity or when certain apps are launched. If the VPN server is currently down for maintenance, or if you are on a slow connection, these automatic connection attempts will repeatedly stall your internet traffic and throw annoying error messages.
Disabling Auto-Triggering
To regain manual control over your secure routing and stop Windows 11 from automatically connecting to VPNs in the background, you must disable the auto-trigger settings within the network profile.
Press the Windows Key, type VPN settings, and press Enter to open the Network & internet > VPN configuration page. You will see a list of your configured VPN profiles. Click on the VPN connection that is causing the issue to expand its options. Click the Advanced options button. Scroll down the resulting page until you find the section labelled “Automatic configuration” or “VPN auto-triggering” (the exact phrasing varies slightly depending on the VPN type). Look for the toggle switch labelled Let apps automatically use this VPN connection or similar. Click the toggle to turn it completely Off. You must now manually click “Connect” from the system tray whenever you actually need the secure tunnel.
