How to Disable the Handwashing Timer on an Apple Watch

During the height of global health concerns, Apple introduced a well-intentioned feature to the Apple Watch: the Handwashing Timer. Utilising the watch’s microphone to listen for the sound of running water and its motion sensors to detect scrubbing movements, the watch automatically starts a 20-second countdown timer every time you wash your hands. While helpful for some, this feature can trigger accidentally while washing dishes, rinsing vegetables, or simply running the tap, leading to annoying haptic vibrations and unnecessary battery drain. If you prefer to manage your own hygiene without a digital countdown, you can easily turn this feature off.

How to Disable the Handwashing Timer

You can turn off the handwashing detection directly from your wrist, without needing to open the Watch app on your paired iPhone.

  1. Wake up your Apple Watch and press the Digital Crown (the round dial on the side) to view your app grid or list.
  2. Find and tap the Settings app (the grey gear icon).
  3. Scroll down the Settings menu (you can use your finger or rotate the Digital Crown) until you locate Handwashing.
  4. Tap on Handwashing.
  5. You will see a toggle switch labelled Handwashing Timer.
  6. Tap the switch to move it to the Off position (the green background will turn to grey).

The change takes effect immediately. Your Apple Watch will no longer listen for running water or vibrate to initiate a 20-second countdown when you are at the sink.
