The Shifting Navigation Pane
Windows 11’s File Explorer features a navigation pane on the left side, providing a tree-like view of your drives and folders. By default, there is an option that forces this pane to automatically expand and jump to whatever folder you are currently viewing in the main right-hand pane. If you navigate deep into a nested series of folders, the left pane will rapidly unfold, scrolling down and expanding directories to mirror your location. While intended to keep you oriented, this constant shifting and expanding can make the navigation pane feel chaotic, causing you to lose track of higher-level folders you were using as shortcuts.
Disabling ‘Expand to Current Folder’
To keep your navigation pane static and stop Windows 11 from automatically expanding folders in the left sidebar to match your current location, you must disable a specific Folder Option.
Open File Explorer (Windows key + E). In the top command bar, click the three horizontal dots (See more) to open a drop-down menu, and select Options. This will open the Folder Options dialog box. Click on the View tab at the top. Scroll down through the “Advanced settings” list until you reach the very bottom section labeled Navigation pane. Look for the checkbox labeled Expand to current folder. Uncheck this box. Click Apply, then click OK. The navigation pane will now only expand or collapse when you manually click the tiny arrow icons next to the folder names.
