The Sea of Red Squiggles
Google Chrome features a built-in spellchecking engine that actively scans the text you type into any web form, forum post, or email composer. Whenever it detects a word not found in its internal dictionary, it automatically highlights the text with a bright red, jagged underline. While useful for drafting professional emails, this feature is incredibly distracting if you are a programmer frequently typing code snippets into web forms, a gamer typing character names into a wiki, or a bilingual user who frequently mixes languages in casual chat boxes. The constant barrage of red underlines can make the text visually chaotic and difficult to read.
Silencing the Grammar Police
To completely disable the visual intrusion and stop Google Chrome from automatically highlighting unrecognized words with red squiggles, you must turn off the browser’s native spellcheck functionality.
Open your Google Chrome browser, click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner, and select Settings from the dropdown menu. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Languages. In the main right-hand panel, look for the section specifically titled “Spell check.” You will see a master toggle switch labelled Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages. Click this toggle to turn it completely Off. The change is immediate. You can return to any web form or text box you were currently typing in, and all the red jagged underlines will instantly vanish, allowing you to type code or jargon in peace.
