Windows 11 utilizes a cloud-based reputation system called Defender SmartScreen. Whenever you download an executable file (.exe), Windows checks the file’s hash against Microsoft’s servers. If the file is a brand-new open-source utility that very few people have downloaded, SmartScreen will instantly panic and throw a massive blue box across your screen: “Windows protected your PC. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting.”
The “Don’t run” button is huge and obvious, but the option to actually run the file seems completely missing. If you compiled the software yourself, or if you downloaded it directly from a trusted developer’s GitHub page, you can easily bypass this artificial network block and force Windows to execute the file.
How to Safely Bypass the Windows 11 SmartScreen Block
You must use a hidden text link within the blue warning box to reveal the override button.
- When the massive blue “Windows protected your PC” screen appears, do not click the “Don’t run” button.
- Look closely at the text underneath the main heading. You will see a small, underlined link that says More info.
- Click on More info.
- The blue box will instantly expand downwards. It will now display the exact App Name and the Publisher (which is usually listed as “Unknown publisher” for indie software).
- A brand-new button will appear at the very bottom of the window labeled Run anyway.
- Click Run anyway.
The blue SmartScreen box will instantly vanish, and your application will begin installing or running normally. Windows 11 will remember your choice for this specific file, so you will only ever have to bypass the SmartScreen block once per unique executable.
