If you press Windows Key + Ctrl + Q in Windows 11, the operating system instantly launches the “Quick Assist” application. This is a built-in remote desktop tool designed to allow Microsoft support agents (or tech-savvy family members) to briefly take control of your computer over the internet to troubleshoot problems.
While useful in emergencies, the Quick Assist app is a known vector for tech support scams. Furthermore, the shortcut requires pressing three keys simultaneously, making it incredibly easy to trigger by accident when playing complex PC games or using complex software like Adobe Premiere. If you never intend to allow someone to remotely control your computer, you can disable the Quick Assist shortcut entirely.
How to Disable the Windows Key + Ctrl + Q Shortcut
You must use Microsoft’s official PowerToys utility to safely intercept and unbind the shortcut.
- Download and install Microsoft PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or GitHub.
- Launch the PowerToys application from your Start menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Keyboard Manager.
- Ensure the “Enable Keyboard Manager” toggle switch is turned On.
- Click the Remap a shortcut button in the main window.
- A new configuration window will appear. Click the plus (+) icon to create a new rule.
- Under the “Shortcut” column on the left, click the Type button and press Windows Key + Ctrl + Q.
- Under the “Mapped To” column on the right, click the drop-down menu and select Disable from the very top of the list.
- Click OK at the top right of the window.
The remote desktop shortcut is now dead. As long as the PowerToys utility is running in the background, you will never accidentally deploy the Quick Assist tool again, securing your workflow from unexpected interruptions.
