Introduced in a recent feature update, Windows 11 includes a system-wide “Live Captions” feature. By pressing Windows Key + Ctrl + L, a massive black bar appears at the top or bottom of your screen, using localized AI to instantly transcribe any audio currently playing on your PC (from YouTube videos to Zoom calls) into text.
While an incredible accessibility tool, this shortcut requires pressing three keys on the far left side of the keyboard simultaneously. For users working in complex software like Blender, Photoshop, or IDEs, this cluster of keys is heavily trafficked. Accidentally triggering the Live Captions bar violently reorganizes all your open windows to make room for it. If you do not require hearing assistance, you can disable the shortcut.
How to Disable the Windows Key + Ctrl + L Shortcut
You must use Microsoft’s official PowerToys utility to securely intercept the transcription shortcut.
- Download and install Microsoft PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or GitHub.
- Launch the PowerToys application from your Start menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Keyboard Manager.
- Ensure the “Enable Keyboard Manager” toggle switch is turned On.
- Click the Remap a shortcut button in the main window.
- A new configuration window will appear. Click the plus (+) icon to create a new rule.
- Under the “Shortcut” column on the left, click the Type button and press Windows Key + Ctrl + L.
- Under the “Mapped To” column on the right, click the drop-down menu and select Disable from the very top of the list.
- Click OK at the top right of the window.
The Live Captions shortcut is now inert. As long as the PowerToys utility is running in the background, you can safely mash your left modifier keys without fear of accidentally deploying the massive transcription bar.
