How to View Hidden Files and Folders in Windows 11

By default, Microsoft intentionally hides hundreds of system files and configuration folders on your Windows 11 PC. This is a security measure designed to prevent average users from accidentally deleting critical operating system data, which could cause the computer to crash entirely.

However, if you are an advanced user, a developer, or simply someone trying to install modifications for a PC game, you will frequently need to access these invisible directories—most notably, the hidden AppData folder located within your user profile. Because Windows 11 completely redesigned the File Explorer interface, older tutorials for Windows 10 no longer apply. Here is how to quickly reveal all hidden files and folders in Windows 11.

Method 1: Reveal Hidden Files Using the Windows 11 File Explorer Menu

This is the fastest and most modern method to toggle the visibility of hidden items. It utilises the updated command bar at the top of the new File Explorer window.

1. Click the folder icon on your taskbar or press the Windows Key + E to open File Explorer.
2. Look at the command bar running across the top of the window and click on the View button.
3. In the dropdown menu that appears, hover your mouse over the Show option at the very bottom.
4. A secondary menu will slide out to the right. Click on Hidden items to check it.

Immediately, you will see previously invisible files and folders appear. They are intentionally displayed with slightly faded, translucent icons to remind you that they are system files and should be handled with care.

Method 2: Reveal Hidden Files via Folder Options (Legacy Method)

If you prefer the traditional Windows method, or if you also need to reveal protected operating system files (which are hidden by a secondary, stricter setting), you must use the classic Folder Options dialogue box.

1. Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E).
2. Click the three horizontal dots (…) located on the far right side of the top command bar.
3. Select Options from the dropdown menu to open the classic Folder Options window.
4. Click the View tab at the top of the window.
5. In the “Advanced settings” scroll box, locate the folder icon labelled Hidden files and folders.
6. Select the radio button next to Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
7. Click Apply and then OK.

How to Reveal Protected Operating System Files

Even with “Hidden items” turned on, Windows 11 keeps its most sensitive core files completely invisible. You should only reveal these if you are following a specific, advanced troubleshooting guide.

1. Open the Folder Options window again and navigate back to the View tab.
2. Scroll down a few lines past the hidden files setting until you see a checkbox labelled Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
3. Uncheck this box.
4. A severe warning pop-up will appear, asking if you are sure you want to display these files. Click Yes to confirm.
5. Click Apply and OK.

When you are finished troubleshooting your system or moving your required files, it is highly recommended to repeat these steps and re-hide these items to ensure you do not accidentally damage your Windows 11 installation in the future.
