How to Create a Windows 11 Local Account Instead of a Microsoft Account

When you purchase a new PC or perform a clean installation of Microsoft’s latest operating system, you are eventually greeted by the Out-Of-Box Experience (OOBE) setup screen. Historically, Windows allowed you to simply type in a username and immediately start using your computer offline. However, Microsoft now heavily pushes users toward its cloud ecosystem. The modern Windows 11 setup screen seemingly forces you to connect to the internet and sign in with a mandatory Microsoft email address (such as Outlook or Hotmail). For users who value their privacy, or those setting up a computer for a business environment without dedicated IT infrastructure, this is incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, there are hidden workarounds. You can bypass this restriction if you know how to create a Windows 11 local account instead of a Microsoft account.

What is a Local Account?

A local account is the traditional Windows user profile. The username, password, and all associated settings are stored exclusively on your computer’s physical hard drive. None of your data is synced to Microsoft’s cloud servers. You will not receive targeted advertising based on your Edge browsing history, your desktop wallpaper will not magically sync to other devices, and you are not required to provide Microsoft with a recovery phone number. It is a completely self-contained, offline profile.

Method 1: The “[email protected]” Bypass (Easiest)

This is currently the fastest and most reliable method to bypass the mandatory online login during the initial Windows 11 setup screen.

1. Proceed through the initial Windows 11 setup screens (selecting your language, region, and keyboard layout) until you reach the screen demanding you connect to a network.
2. Connect to your Wi-Fi network as requested.
3. The setup will update and eventually display the “Let’s add your Microsoft account” screen.
4. In the email address field, type: [email protected]
5. Click Next.
6. In the password field, type any random string of letters (e.g., “password123”).
7. Click Sign in.
8. Windows will attempt to verify the credentials and display an error screen stating, “Oops, something went wrong.” This happens because the “[email protected]” address has been banned by Microsoft for having too many failed login attempts.
9. Click Next on the error screen.
10. The system will finally admit defeat and present you with the “Who is going to use this device?” screen.
11. You can now type your desired local username and proceed to create a standard, offline Windows profile.

Method 2: The Command Prompt Bypass (No Internet Required)

If you are setting up a PC in an area with absolutely no internet connection, Windows 11 will simply block you from proceeding past the network selection screen. You must use a hidden terminal command to disable the network requirement.

1. When you reach the “Let’s connect you to a network” screen, do not select a Wi-Fi network.
2. On your physical keyboard, press Shift + F10 simultaneously. (On some laptops, you may need to press Shift + Fn + F10).
3. A black Command Prompt terminal window will appear.
4. Click inside the black window and type the following command exactly: OOBE\BYPASSNRO
5. Press Enter.
6. Your computer will immediately reboot and return you to the beginning of the setup process.
7. Proceed through the language and keyboard screens again until you reach the network screen.
8. You will now see a new, hidden button at the bottom of the screen that says “I don’t have internet”. Click it.
9. On the next screen, click “Continue with limited setup”.
10. You will immediately be taken to the local account creation screen, allowing you to set up an offline profile without ever connecting to Microsoft’s servers.

Creating a Local Account on an Already Setup PC

If you have already capitulated and signed in with a Microsoft Account, you are not permanently locked in. You can easily revert your active profile to a local account from within the operating system.

1. Click the Start Menu and open Settings.
2. Click on Accounts in the left-hand sidebar.
3. Click on Your info.
4. Under the “Account settings” section, click the link that says Sign in with a local account instead.
5. A blue verification box will appear. Follow the prompts, confirm your current Microsoft password, and then create a new offline username and password.
6. Your PC will sign you out. When you sign back in, your profile will be entirely local.
