The OS-Level Protocol Redirection Vector
By default, the Windows 11 kernel is mathematically hard-coded to route all HTTP, HTTPS, and HTML file requests directly to Microsoft Edge. When you click a hyperlink in a third-party application like Discord or a PDF document, Edge will autonomously launch, overriding your preferred workflow. If you primarily operate within Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Brave, you must execute a structural override within the Windows registry, instructing the OS to permanently sever its default linkage to Edge and reassign the web protocol handling to your chosen browser architecture.
How to Change Default Browser in Windows 11
Microsoft significantly increased the friction required to execute this override in Windows 11, moving the protocol from a simple one-click toggle to a more granular, extension-based configuration matrix.
1. Summon the Master Architecture:
* Click the Start Menu (the Windows icon on your taskbar).
* Click the Settings gear icon to launch the master control matrix.
2. Navigate the Application Matrix:
* In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on the section explicitly labelled Apps.
* In the main pane, click on Default apps.
3. The Target Acquisition (Locating Your Browser):
* You are now viewing the master routing registry. Under the “Set defaults for applications” search bar, you will see a massive list of every software payload installed on the silicon.
* Scroll down until you locate your preferred browser (e.g., Google Chrome or Firefox).
* Click on the browser’s icon.
4. The Execution Trigger (The Master Override):
* At the absolute top of the specific browser’s configuration page, you will see a prominent banner stating: “Make [Browser Name] your default browser.”
* Click the button labelled Set default located to the right of that text.
* The Mathematical Verification: The Windows kernel instantly rewrites the primary routing tables. A mathematical checkmark will appear next to the button. If you scroll down the page, you will now see that the `.htm`, `.html`, `HTTP`, and `HTTPS` protocols have all been autonomously reassigned from Edge to your chosen browser.
5. The Surgical PDF Override (Optional):
* While the “Set default” button handles web links, Microsoft Edge often retains a stubborn, hard-coded grip on `.pdf` files.
* Scroll down the same page until you locate the .pdf extension.
* If it still shows the Microsoft Edge icon, click the icon.
* A modal prompt will demand authorization: “How do you want to open .pdf files from now on?”
* Select your preferred browser (or a dedicated PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat) and click OK to finalize the complete protocol redirection.
