The Overcrowded Address Book
The beauty of the Apple ecosystem is its seamless integration. If you sign into your Mac and your iPhone with the same Apple ID, iCloud automatically syncs your data between them. However, this can become a massive headache if you use your Mac strictly for professional freelance work and your iPhone for personal use. By default, iCloud will pull every single personal contact from your phone (plumbers, distant relatives, takeout restaurants) and merge them into the Contacts app on your Mac. When you open your Mac’s email client to message a client named “David,” you might accidentally autocomplete the email address for your old college roommate instead.
Isolating Your Rolodex
To maintain a strict separation between your professional desktop environment and your personal mobile device, you must stop macOS from automatically syncing Contacts via iCloud.
Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings. At the very top of the left-hand sidebar, click on your Apple ID profile name (where your picture is). In the main right-hand panel, click on iCloud. Under the “Apps Using iCloud” section, click on Show All to expand the full list of services. Scroll down until you find Contacts. Click the toggle switch next to Contacts to turn it Off. macOS will present a warning dialogue asking what you want to do with the previously synced contacts currently stored on your Mac. Select Delete from Mac to wipe the personal contacts from the computer, leaving you with a clean slate for your professional address book.
