Whenever you select text inside a cell in Microsoft Excel (or highlight a range of cells), a faint “Mini Toolbar” appears hovering just above your cursor. If you move your mouse toward it, the toolbar becomes solid, offering quick access to formatting options like bold, italics, font color, and cell borders.
While Microsoft designed this feature to save you a trip to the main ribbon at the top of the screen, many users find it highly distracting. It can obscure data in the cells directly above the one you are editing, and it frequently gets in the way when you are trying to click and drag to select multiple cells.
If you prefer a clean workspace, you can easily disable the Mini Toolbar across all of Microsoft Office.
How to Turn Off the Mini Toolbar in Excel
Disabling the Mini Toolbar is a simple settings change that takes only a few clicks:
- Open Microsoft Excel on your computer.
- Click on File in the top-left corner of the ribbon menu.
- Select Options at the very bottom of the left-hand sidebar (if you don’t see it, you may need to click “More…” first).
- In the Excel Options window, ensure the General tab is selected on the left.
- Look under the “User Interface options” section at the top of the page.
- Uncheck the box labeled Show Mini Toolbar on selection.
- Click OK at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
Does This Affect Other Office Apps?
Yes. The “Show Mini Toolbar on selection” setting is often shared across the Microsoft Office suite. If you disable it in Excel, you will likely find that it is also disabled when you select text in Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint.
If you ever decide you miss having those quick formatting options hovering near your cursor, simply repeat the steps above and check the box again to bring the Mini Toolbar back.
