How to Create a Windows 11 Bootable USB Drive

Whether you are building a brand-new custom gaming PC, upgrading an older laptop with a fresh solid-state drive, or trying to rescue a computer that has completely crashed and refuses to boot, you cannot simply download Windows from a web browser. You must install the operating system using a Bootable USB Drive.

A bootable USB drive acts as physical installation media. It bypasses the computer’s corrupted or empty hard drive and forces the motherboard to load the Windows setup environment directly from the USB stick. Fortunately, Microsoft provides a free, official tool that makes creating this drive incredibly simple.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following requirements:

• A working Windows PC with an active internet connection.
• A USB Flash Drive with at least 8GB of storage space.
• Crucial Warning: The creation process will completely erase and format the USB drive. Ensure there are no important photos, documents, or files on the flash drive before proceeding, as they will be permanently destroyed.

Step 1: Download the Media Creation Tool

Microsoft offers a free utility that automatically handles the downloading and formatting process.

1. On your working PC, open a web browser and go to the official Microsoft download page: microsoft.com/software-download/windows11
2. Scroll down to the second section titled Create Windows 11 Installation Media.
3. Click the blue Download Now button.
4. A small executable file named MediaCreationToolW11.exe will download to your computer.

Step 2: Create the Bootable Drive

1. Plug your blank 8GB USB flash drive into the working PC.
2. Locate the MediaCreationToolW11.exe file in your Downloads folder and double-click to run it. Click “Yes” if Windows asks for administrator permission.
3. The tool will launch with a “Getting a few things ready” screen. Read and click Accept on the license terms.
4. Select Language and Edition: The tool will default to the recommended settings for the PC you are currently using. If you are creating the drive for a different PC in another country, uncheck “Use the recommended options for this PC” and change the language. Otherwise, leave it as is and click Next.
5. Choose which media to use: Select the radio button for USB flash drive and click Next. (Do not choose ISO file, as that requires third-party burning software).
6. Select a USB flash drive: The tool will display a list of connected drives. Click on your USB drive to highlight it. (Double-check the drive letter to ensure you do not accidentally select an external backup hard drive).
7. Click Next.

The Media Creation Tool will now take over. It will download a massive 5GB+ Windows 11 image file from Microsoft’s servers and then carefully format and write that data to the USB stick to make it bootable. Depending on your internet speed, this process can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. You can continue using your PC while it runs in the background.

When the screen says “Your USB flash drive is ready,” click Finish. Safely eject the USB drive.

Step 3: How to Use the Bootable Drive

You now hold a master copy of Windows 11. To use it on the broken or new PC:

1. Plug the USB drive directly into the motherboard of the target PC (avoid USB hubs).
2. Turn the PC on. Immediately and repeatedly tap the Boot Menu key on the keyboard (usually F8, F11, F12, or Del, depending on the manufacturer) before the Windows logo appears.
3. A text menu will appear on the screen. Select your USB Flash Drive from the list and press Enter.

The screen will go dark, and the purple Windows 11 Setup screen will appear, allowing you to begin the installation process on your new hard drive.
