A clutter-free desktop workspace improves visual clarity and highlights custom wallpapers. While Windows 11 allows users to delete or rearrange standard application shortcuts, the Recycle Bin is treated as a protected system object. Right-clicking the Recycle Bin displays options to empty or open it, but the standard “Delete” command is notably absent. If you prefer a minimalist desktop or access the Recycle Bin exclusively through File Explorer, you can cleanly hide the icon using Windows 11 Desktop Icon Settings.
Hiding the Recycle Bin via Windows 11 Settings
The standard, officially supported method to toggle system desktop icons is through the Personalisation settings menu.
- Press Windows + I to launch the Settings app.
- Select Personalisation from the left-hand navigation menu.
- In the right pane, scroll down and click on Themes.
- Under the Related settings heading at the bottom of the page, click Desktop icon settings.
- The classic Desktop Icon Settings dialogue box will open on your screen.
- Under the Desktop icons group at the top, locate the checkbox labelled Recycle Bin.
- Uncheck the box next to Recycle Bin.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
The Recycle Bin icon will immediately disappear from your desktop. All existing files inside the bin remain intact, and you can restore the icon at any point by returning to this menu and rechecking the box.
Accessing the Recycle Bin When the Desktop Icon Is Hidden
Hiding the desktop shortcut does not disable file deletion or dumpster protection. When you need to recover an accidentally deleted file or purge deleted items, you can access the Recycle Bin through alternative pathways:
- Via File Explorer Address Bar: Press Windows + E to open File Explorer. Click into the address bar at the top, type
Recycle Bin, and press Enter. - Via the Run Dialogue: Press Windows + R, type
shell:RecycleBinFolder, and press Enter. - Pin to Start or Quick Access: When inside the Recycle Bin folder in File Explorer, right-click an empty space or navigation entry and select Pin to Start or Pin to Quick access for convenient access without desktop clutter.
Hiding All Desktop Icons Simultaneously
If your goal is an entirely clean desktop devoid of any shortcuts, files, or system folders, you can toggle global icon visibility with a single cursor click:
- Right-click an empty space on your desktop.
- Hover your mouse over the View option in the context menu.
- Click Show desktop icons to uncheck it.
Every icon on your desktop will vanish instantly while remaining completely preserved in your C:\Users\<Username>\Desktop folder.
