How to Right-Click on a Mac

One of the most enduring myths in the technology world is that Apple computers do not have a right-click function. This misconception stems from the fact that early Apple mice had only a single physical button, and modern Mac trackpads appear as one large, seamless piece of glass.

In reality, macOS heavily relies on right-clicking (officially called a “Secondary Click” by Apple) to open context menus, copy text, and manage files. The functionality is built into every Mac; you simply need to know the physical gesture to activate it.

Method 1: The Two-Finger Tap (Trackpad)

If you are using a MacBook or an external Apple Magic Trackpad, this is the default and most popular method.

  • Simply tap or click the glass trackpad using two fingers simultaneously.

The context menu will immediately appear where your cursor is located. You do not need to click in a specific corner of the trackpad; anywhere on the glass will work as long as two fingers make contact at the same time.

Method 2: The Control-Click (Keyboard)

If you struggle with the two-finger gesture or are using an older, single-button mouse, you can use a keyboard modifier to force a right-click.

  1. Press and hold the Control (Ctrl) key on your keyboard. (Make sure you use the Control key, not the Command ⌘ key).
  2. While holding the key down, perform a normal single click with your mouse or trackpad.

macOS intercepts this combination and translates it into a secondary right-click, opening the appropriate menu.

Method 3: The Magic Mouse

The Apple Magic Mouse looks like a solid, smooth piece of plastic without any visible buttons, but the entire top surface is actually touch-sensitive.

  • To right-click, simply click on the right side of the mouse surface.

If this does not work, the feature may be disabled in your settings.

How to Change Your Right-Click Settings

If none of the methods above are working, or if you prefer to set up your trackpad to behave more like a traditional Windows laptop (clicking the bottom right corner), you can easily change the preferences.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences).
  3. Scroll down the sidebar and select either Trackpad or Mouse (depending on what you are using).
  4. Look for the option labelled Secondary click.
  5. Click the drop-down menu next to it.

If you are using a Trackpad, you can change it from “Click with two fingers” to “Click in bottom right corner.” If you are using a Magic Mouse, you can ensure it is set to “Click on right side.”
