How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Let Windows manage my default printer’ Option

Windows 10 attempts to be helpful by anticipating your needs, particularly when it comes to hardware. One of the ways it does this is through a setting called “Let Windows manage my default printer.” When this option is enabled, Windows abandons the concept of a static, globally assigned default printer. Instead, it dynamically changes your default printer to whichever device you used most recently at your current physical location.

While this sounds convenient if you constantly move between a home office and a corporate network, it is a nightmare for users with multiple printers in the same building. If you have a cheap black-and-white laser printer for text documents and an expensive color inkjet for photos, Windows will constantly swap the default between the two based on your last action. This inevitably leads to accidentally printing a 50-page plain text document on expensive glossy photo paper because you forgot to manually change the printer in the print dialog. If you want a specific printer to remain the default permanently, you must disable this automated management.

How to Stop Windows from Changing Your Printer

You can reclaim manual control of your default printer via the Devices settings.

1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
2. In the Settings menu, click on Devices.
3. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Printers & scanners.
4. Scroll down past the list of your installed printers and scanners.
5. Locate the checkbox labelled Let Windows manage my default printer.
6. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.

Now, scroll back up your list of printers, click on the one you want to use as your permanent default, click the Manage button, and then click Set as default. Windows will respect this choice and will no longer dynamically change your default printer behind your back.
