The Security Risk of Public Visibility
Windows 10 includes a feature called “Network Discovery.” When this is enabled, your computer actively broadcasts its presence to the local network, allowing other computers to see your machine, access shared folders, and connect to shared printers. It also allows your computer to see other devices on the network.
This is highly convenient for a private Home or Office network. However, if you take your laptop to a coffee shop, an airport, or a hotel, leaving Network Discovery turned on is a massive security risk. It allows every stranger connected to that public Wi-Fi hotspot to see your computer and potentially attempt to access your open files. You must ensure your computer remains invisible on public networks.
How to Turn Off Network Discovery for Public Networks
Windows allows you to configure different discovery settings based on the type of network you are connected to.
- Click the Start button, type
Control Panel, and press Enter. - Click on Network and Internet, then click on Network and Sharing Center.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click the link that says Change advanced sharing settings.
- You will see different network profiles (Private, Guest or Public, All Networks). Click the down arrow next to Guest or Public to expand that section.
- Under the “Network discovery” heading, select the radio button for Turn off network discovery.
- Under the “File and printer sharing” heading, select Turn off file and printer sharing.
- Click the Save changes button at the bottom of the window.
Now, whenever Windows detects that you have connected to a network designated as “Public,” it will automatically enforce these rules, keeping your laptop hidden from other users and securing your personal files from unauthorized access.
