How to Disable the Taskbar Widgets Board in Windows 11

The Distracting News Feed

Windows 11 includes a highly aggressive telemetry and news aggregator called the “Widgets Board.” By default, this feature manifests as a dynamic weather icon anchored to the far left side of your taskbar. If your mouse cursor accidentally hovers over this weather icon for even a fraction of a second, Windows will violently launch a massive, full-height panel covering the left half of your screen. This panel is filled with tabloid news articles, stock tickers, and advertisements designed to generate engagement. If you are a professional trying to work, this accidental pop-up is incredibly disruptive. You must completely unpin the board.

How to Turn Off the Taskbar Widgets

You can permanently remove the weather icon and sever the hover trigger via the Taskbar settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
  3. In the main window, scroll down and click on Taskbar.
  4. Look for the section labeled “Taskbar items.”
  5. Find the master toggle switch labeled Widgets.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

A Professional Desktop

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will immediately delete the weather icon from the left side of your taskbar. Because the icon is gone, the hover trigger is permanently destroyed. You can freely move your mouse across the bottom of your screen without any fear of accidentally launching the massive, distracting news feed, restoring a clean and professional aesthetic to your operating system.
