If you have designed a beautiful series of infographics, a company timeline, or a collection of social media graphics inside Microsoft PowerPoint, you cannot upload a .pptx file to Instagram or a WordPress blog. You need standard image files.
While you could theoretically use the Windows Snipping Tool to take a manual screenshot of every single slide, the resulting images will be low-resolution, blurry, and inconsistently cropped. Instead, you can use PowerPoint’s native export engine to perfectly slice your presentation into a folder containing pristine, high-resolution JPEG or PNG images of every single slide in seconds.
Step 1: Open the Export Menu
- Open your completed PowerPoint presentation.
- Click on the File tab in the top-left corner of the ribbon.
- In the left-hand navigation column, select Save As.
- Click Browse to open the standard Windows file explorer dialogue box.
Step 2: Change the File Format
- Navigate to the folder where you want to save the images (e.g., your Desktop or a new specific folder).
- Look at the Save as type dropdown menu at the bottom of the window. By default, it says “PowerPoint Presentation (*.pptx)”.
- Click the dropdown menu and scroll down until you find the image formats.
- Select JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg). (Note: You can also select PNG if your slides contain flat vector graphics or text and you want mathematically perfect, lossless compression, but JPEG is universally preferred for general use).
- Click Save.
Step 3: Export All Slides vs. Just One
The moment you click Save, a small dialogue box will pop up in the center of your screen asking: “Which slides do you want to export?”
- Just This One: If you select this, PowerPoint will only export the specific slide you were currently looking at before you clicked File. It will drop a single
.jpgfile directly into your chosen folder. - All Slides: If you select this, PowerPoint will automatically create a brand new sub-folder (named after your presentation) in your chosen location. It will then rapidly process the entire deck, dropping Slide1.jpg, Slide2.jpg, Slide3.jpg, etc., directly into that new folder.
Bonus: How to Force 4K High-Resolution Exports
By default, PowerPoint exports images at a rather paltry 96 DPI (Dots Per Inch), which usually results in an image that is 1280×720 or 1920×1080. If you are uploading these images to print, they will look terrible.
You can force PowerPoint to export massive, razor-sharp 4K images by tweaking the Windows Registry.
- Press Windows Key + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\PowerPoint\Options(Note: The 16.0 might be different depending on your Office version). - Right-click the empty space in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it exactly
ExportBitmapResolution. - Double-click the new item, change the Base to Decimal, and enter 300 in the Value data box. Click OK.
Now, whenever you follow the steps above to export JPEGs, PowerPoint will bypass the 96 DPI limit and render massive, ultra-high-resolution images perfect for professional publishing.
