How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Adding Spacing Between Paragraphs

By default, Google Docs often applies automatic styling to make documents look more professional. One of these default behaviors is adding extra vertical spacing (padding) below a paragraph whenever you press the Enter key. Instead of simply dropping the cursor to the very next line, Docs inserts a gap, making it look like you have pressed Enter twice.

While this is standard practice for writing essays or modern web copy, it is infuriating when you are trying to write tight, single-spaced content. If you are drafting a formal letter where the address block needs to be tightly grouped, or if you are writing lines of poetry, that automatic gap ruins your formatting. You are forced to use the “Shift + Enter” workaround (which creates a soft return) just to keep lines together. If you want absolute control over your document’s line spacing and want the Enter key to do exactly what it says, you must disable this automatic padding.

How to Stop Automatic Paragraph Spacing

You can remove the default spacing behavior via the Line Spacing menu.

1. Open your document in Google Docs.
2. First, highlight the text you want to fix. To apply the fix to the entire document, press Ctrl + A (or Cmd + A on Mac) to select everything.
3. Look at the top toolbar and click on Format.
4. Hover your mouse over Line & paragraph spacing to open the sub-menu.
5. Look at the bottom of this sub-menu. If you see an option that says Remove space after paragraph, click it.
6. (Optional) To ensure your entire document is tightly spaced, you may also want to select Single from the top of that same menu.

From now on, pressing the Enter key will drop the cursor exactly one line down, with no hidden padding added. Your text blocks will remain tight and cohesive, exactly as you type them.
