How to Disable Tailored Experiences in Windows 11

The Behavioral Profile

Windows 11 constantly monitors how you use your computer to build a behavioral profile. Microsoft utilizes a feature called “Tailored experiences” to analyze the diagnostic data it collects (such as what apps you install, what settings you change, and what websites you visit in Edge). The operating system then uses this telemetry to push personalized tips, targeted advertisements, and specific software recommendations directly into your Start Menu and lock screen. If you refuse to allow your desktop operating system to function as a data-mining platform for personalized marketing, you must completely sever this telemetry connection.

How to Turn Off Tailored Experiences

You can permanently revoke Microsoft’s permission to personalize your desktop via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. In the main window, scroll down and click on Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Scroll down to the section labeled “Tailored experiences.”
  5. Click the small arrow icon (>) to expand the menu.
  6. Look for the master toggle switch labeled “Let Microsoft use your diagnostic data, excluding information about websites you browse, to offer personalized tips, ads, and recommendations.”
  7. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

A Generic Workspace

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will immediately stop analyzing your diagnostic telemetry for marketing purposes. While the operating system may still occasionally display generic tips or system notifications, they will no longer be algorithmically targeted based on your personal behavior, ensuring a much higher degree of privacy while using your computer.
