The Hover Intrusion
One of the flagship productivity features in Windows 11 is “Snap Layouts.” This system allows you to easily arrange multiple windows on your screen in perfect grids. However, the way Microsoft forces you to interact with it is highly intrusive. By default, if you simply rest your mouse cursor over the “Maximize” button (the square icon in the top right corner of any window) for a split second, a massive drop-down menu suddenly appears, completely covering the top-right portion of your application with various grid options. If you frequently use the maximize button manually and find this sudden pop-up visually distracting or annoying, you can disable the hover trigger.
How to Disable the Snap Layouts Hover Menu
You can turn off the hover popup without breaking the core snapping functionality by adjusting the system multitasking settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
- In the main window, click on Multitasking.
- Look for the section labeled Snap windows. (Ensure the master toggle switch remains ON, or you will break window snapping entirely).
- Click the small downward-facing arrow next to the master switch to expand the detailed options.
- Look for the checkbox labeled “Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button.”
- Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.
The Clean Interface
The change takes effect immediately. You can now rest your mouse cursor on the maximize button of any application, and absolutely nothing will pop up. You can click the button to maximize your window normally. If you ever actually want to use the Snap Layouts grid, simply hold down the Windows Key and press the Z key on your keyboard to instantly summon the menu on demand, rather than having it triggered by an accidental mouse hover.
