Windows 11 heavily relies on Location Services to provide geographically relevant data across the operating system. It allows the Weather widget to display local forecasts, the Maps app to provide turn-by-turn navigation, and the automatic time zone feature to adjust your clock when travelling. However, because this feature constantly polls Wi-Fi triangulation data and IP address telemetry in the background, it presents a significant privacy concern for users who prefer strict operational security. Furthermore, on stationary desktop PCs that never move from a single office desk, leaving Location Services enabled is entirely redundant.
This guide explains how to completely disable Location Services system-wide in Windows 11, preventing the OS and all installed applications from accessing your geographical coordinates.
Disable Location Services via Settings
Microsoft provides a centralized master switch that instantly cuts off location data access for the entire operating system and all Microsoft Store applications.
- Click the Start Button and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
