The Taskbar Distraction
By default, Microsoft pins a feature called “News and Interests” (often displaying as a weather icon) directly to the right side of your Windows 11 Taskbar. Hovering over or clicking this icon spawns a massive, full-screen widget board filled with MSN news articles, celebrity gossip, stock tickers, and advertisements. For professionals who require a clean, distraction-free desktop environment, this constantly updating ticker of clickbait journalism is highly intrusive and consumes unnecessary background RAM and network bandwidth. You must completely eradicate it from the interface.
How to Remove News and Interests (Widgets)
You can permanently banish the news ticker from your desktop via the Taskbar settings.
- Right-click on any empty space on your Windows 11 Taskbar.
- Click on Taskbar settings from the small pop-up menu.
- In the Settings window that appears, look at the very top section labeled Taskbar items.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Widgets (this controls the News and Interests board).
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
A Restored Workspace
The change takes effect instantly. The weather icon and the associated news ticker will immediately vanish from your Taskbar, freeing up horizontal space. More importantly, the operating system will terminate the background Widgets.exe process responsible for constantly fetching new articles from Microsoft’s servers. The sprawling board of clickbait and advertisements is completely eradicated from your desktop workflow, guaranteeing a significantly cleaner, faster, and distraction-free professional environment.
