How to Pin a Specific File or Document to the Windows 11 Start Menu

The Windows 11 Start Menu is an excellent launchpad for your most frequently used applications and folders. By default, right-clicking on any app or folder gives you a simple “Pin to Start” option. However, if you right-click on a specific file—such as a crucial Excel spreadsheet, a daily Word document, or a PDF manual—you will quickly realise the “Pin to Start” option is completely missing. Windows 11 restricts pinning exclusively to executable files and directories.

The Workaround: Changing the File Extension

To trick Windows 11 into allowing you to pin a document to the Start Menu, we have to temporarily disguise the document as an executable program (.exe). Once pinned, we can change it back.

Step 1: Make File Extensions Visible

Before we begin, you must ensure Windows is displaying file extensions (the letters after the dot in a filename, like .docx or .pdf).

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Click on View in the top menu bar.
3. Hover over Show and click on File name extensions to ensure it is checked.

Step 2: Disguise the File

1. Navigate to the specific document you want to pin (e.g., Daily_Report.xlsx).
2. Right-click the file and select Rename (or press F2).
3. Delete the .xlsx extension and replace it with .exe (making it Daily_Report.exe).
4. Press Enter. A warning prompt will appear stating the file might become unusable. Click Yes.

The icon will change to look like a generic application.

Step 3: Pin to Start Menu

1. Right-click your newly renamed Daily_Report.exe file.
2. Select Pin to Start from the context menu.

The file is now successfully pinned to the front page of your Start Menu, but it will not open correctly yet.

Step 4: Restore the Original Extension

1. Right-click the Daily_Report.exe file in File Explorer one last time.
2. Select Rename.
3. Change the extension back to its original state (from .exe back to .xlsx).
4. Press Enter and confirm the warning prompt.

Using Your New Pinned Document

If you click the Start button, you will see your document pinned in the “Pinned” section. Even though you changed the extension back, the Start Menu remembers the shortcut. Clicking on the pinned icon will instantly launch the correct application (like Microsoft Excel) and open your specific document, saving you valuable time every day.
