The Lock Screen Billboard
By default, Windows 11 uses a feature called “Windows Spotlight” to download high-resolution photography from Bing to use as your Lock Screen background. However, Microsoft uses this exact same telemetry pipeline to inject “fun facts, tips, tricks, and more” directly onto your Lock Screen. In reality, this is a thinly veiled advertising platform used to push Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, Microsoft Edge browser features, and promotional links before you even type your password. You must completely strip these corporate intrusions from your login screen.
How to Block Lock Screen Ads
You can permanently sever the connection to Microsoft’s promotional servers via the Personalization settings, but you must first abandon the Spotlight feature.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
- In the main window, click on Lock screen.
- In the “Personalize your lock screen” drop-down menu, you must change it from Windows Spotlight to either Picture or Solid color (Microsoft hides the ad toggle if Spotlight is active).
- Once you select Picture or Solid color, a new checkbox will appear below it.
- Uncheck the box labeled “Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen.”
A Professional Login Experience
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for fetching promotional text overlays from the internet. The next time you wake your PC from sleep or press Windows Key + L to lock it, you will see a clean, static image (or solid color) with absolutely zero text, zero links, and zero advertisements. Your Lock Screen is now restored to a professional, distraction-free gateway to your desktop.
