How to Completely Block Windows 11 Copilot Using the Group Policy Editor

Why Block Windows Copilot?

Microsoft has deeply integrated its AI assistant, Copilot, into Windows 11, placing it directly on the taskbar and embedding it into various system functions. While AI tools can improve productivity, many users prefer a streamlined operating system without mandatory AI features. You may want to disable Copilot for privacy concerns, to reduce background resource usage, or simply because you prefer a traditional desktop experience. While you can hide the taskbar icon through normal settings, the most effective way to completely block Copilot across the entire system is by using the Group Policy Editor.

Using the Group Policy Editor

The Group Policy Editor (GPO) is a powerful tool available in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. It allows you to enforce system-wide rules that override standard user settings. Note: If you are using Windows 11 Home, the Group Policy Editor is not officially supported without workarounds, and you may need to use the Registry Editor instead.

How to Disable Copilot via Group Policy

Follow these steps to locate and apply the policy that turns off Windows Copilot.

  1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. In the left-hand navigation pane, expand User Configuration.
  4. Navigate to Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot.
  5. In the right-hand pane, look for a policy named Turn off Windows Copilot.
  6. Double-click on Turn off Windows Copilot to open its configuration window.
  7. Select the Enabled radio button. (Choosing “Enabled” enforces the policy, which effectively turns off the feature).
  8. Click Apply and then click OK.

Applying and Verifying the Changes

Group Policy changes often require a system restart or a manual policy update to take effect.

  1. To apply the changes immediately without restarting, press Windows Key + R, type cmd, and press Enter.
  2. In the Command Prompt, type gpupdate /force and press Enter. Wait for the success message.
  3. Alternatively, simply restart your computer.

Once the policy is applied, the Copilot icon will be completely removed from your taskbar, the Windows Key + C shortcut will no longer launch the assistant, and the underlying background processes associated with the feature will be blocked from running on your system.
