For decades, the F1 key has been the universal “Help” button in Microsoft Windows. If you accidentally brush against it while reaching for the Escape key or the number 1, Windows immediately pauses your workflow, launches your default web browser, and forces open a Bing search page titled “How to get help in Windows 11.”
If you are a power user, gamer, or programmer, you probably never use this built-in help feature, making the F1 key essentially a dead button that only causes frustration. Unfortunately, Windows 11 does not provide a simple toggle switch in the Settings app to turn this off. However, you can intercept and disable the F1 shortcut entirely using a tiny, free utility from Microsoft.
How to Disable the F1 Key Using PowerToys
The safest and most reliable way to disable or remap the F1 key is by using Microsoft PowerToys, an official suite of advanced system utilities.
- Open the Microsoft Store app on your PC, search for PowerToys, and install it.
- Launch the PowerToys application from your Start menu.
- In the left-hand navigation sidebar, scroll down and click on Keyboard Manager.
- Ensure the “Enable Keyboard Manager” toggle at the top of the screen is turned On.
- Click the button labelled Remap a key.
- A new window will appear. Click the + (Plus) button to create a new rule.
- Under the “Physical Key” column on the left, click the Type button and press the F1 key on your keyboard. (Alternatively, select F1 from the drop-down list).
- Under the “Mapped To” column on the right, click the drop-down menu and select Disable at the very top of the list.
- Click the blue OK button in the top-right corner of the window.
- A warning may pop up saying you won’t be able to use F1. Click Continue Anyway.
The change is instantaneous. You can press the F1 key right now, as many times as you like, and your web browser will not open. The annoying Bing search popup is permanently disabled.
