The Podcast Storage Problem
By default, Apple’s native Podcasts app is designed to be as helpful as possible. Whenever a podcast you are subscribed to releases a new episode, the app silently downloads the audio file in the background so it is instantly ready to play during your commute. However, if you are subscribed to dozens of daily news shows or long-form interviews and you fall behind on your listening, these automated downloads will quickly accumulate. Podcast audio files are large, and within a few weeks, the app can secretly consume gigabytes of precious local storage on your iPhone. If your phone is constantly warning you that storage is full, disabling automatic podcast downloads is one of the fastest ways to reclaim space.
How to Turn Off Automatic Downloads Globally
You can change the behavior of the Podcasts app directly through the main iOS Settings. This will apply the new rule to every show you are currently subscribed to.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list of apps and tap on Podcasts.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Episode Downloads.”
- Tap on Automatically Download.
- You will see several options (e.g., Latest per Show, Next in Queue). To completely stop the app from using your storage in the background, select Off.
With this setting disabled, the Podcasts app will only stream audio over Wi-Fi or cellular data when you explicitly press the play button. It will never download a file to your local drive unless you manually tap the download icon on a specific episode.
How to Clear Existing Downloaded Episodes
Changing the setting above prevents future downloads, but it does not delete the gigabytes of files already saved on your phone. To clear out the existing clutter:
- Open the Podcasts app.
- Tap the Library tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap on Downloaded. (If you don’t see this option, you have no local files saved).
- Tap the three horizontal dots (…) in the top right corner.
- Select Remove All Downloads and confirm your choice.
This action deletes the heavy audio files from your storage but leaves your subscriptions and listening history completely intact.
