The Visual Clutter Vector
The File Explorer in Windows 11 defaults to a highly opinionated sorting algorithm, particularly in the Downloads folder. Instead of simply presenting a raw list of files, the operating system automatically groups them into arbitrary temporal categories, such as “Today,” “Earlier this week,” and “Last month.” While intended to help users locate recent items, this forced grouping drastically increases visual clutter, wastes vertical screen space with unnecessary headers, and breaks traditional alphabetical sorting methods.
How to Disable File Grouping
You can strip away these artificial categories and force the File Explorer to present a clean, uninterrupted list of your files.
1. Open the File Explorer (press the Windows Key + E).
2. Navigate to the folder that is currently exhibiting the grouped layout (such as the Downloads folder).
3. Look at the toolbar across the top of the File Explorer window and click on the Sort menu (which has an icon featuring an arrow pointing down alongside several horizontal lines).
4. In the dropdown menu, hover your mouse over the Group by option.
5. A secondary menu will appear to the side. Select (None) from the top of this list.
The File Explorer will immediately collapse the temporal headers and present your files in a standard, continuous list. You can now sort them by Name, Date modified, or Size without any visual interference.
