The Shifting Sidebar
In Windows 11, the File Explorer navigation pane (the sidebar on the left) is designed to help you quickly jump between drives and core folders. By default, Windows enables a feature called “Expand to open folder.” As you navigate deeply into nested directories in the main right-hand window (e.g., C:\Users\Name\Documents\Work\Project\Assets), the left-hand navigation pane automatically unfolds every single folder along that path. If you have deeply nested organizational structures, this automatic expansion instantly clutters the sidebar, pushing your main drives off the screen and forcing you to constantly scroll up and down to find your primary pinned folders.
Locking the Navigation Layout
To keep the left-hand sidebar clean and static, and to stop Windows 11 from automatically unrolling the folder tree to track your location, you must disable the auto-expand tracking feature within the folder options.
Open File Explorer. In the top ribbon menu, click the three horizontal dots (See more) located at the far right. From the dropdown menu, select Options. A small “Folder Options” dialogue box will appear. Click on the View tab at the top. Scroll down through the “Advanced settings” list until you reach the very bottom section, headed “Navigation pane.” Look for the checkbox labelled Expand to open folder. Click this checkbox to completely uncheck it. Click Apply and then OK. The navigation pane will now remain exactly how you manually configure it. You can still manually click the small arrows to expand specific trees, but Windows will no longer aggressively unroll them on your behalf.
