How to Disable Window Drop Shadows in Windows 11

The Visual Overhead

Windows 11 is designed with a modern, layered aesthetic. To help differentiate overlapping applications, the operating system aggressively renders a soft, artificial “drop shadow” around the outer border of every single window, menu, and pop-up box on your desktop. While this looks sleek, the desktop window manager must constantly calculate and re-render these shadows in real-time every time you move or resize an app. If you are running Windows 11 on an older laptop with a weak integrated graphics card, this constant visual processing can cause noticeable UI lag. For maximum graphical performance, you must disable the shadow engine.

How to Turn Off Window Drop Shadows

You can permanently strip the shadows from the interface via the Advanced System settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu, type Advanced system settings, and press Enter to open the System Properties window.
  2. Ensure you are on the Advanced tab at the top of the window.
  3. Under the “Performance” section at the very top, click the Settings… button.
  4. In the Performance Options window, ensure you are on the Visual Effects tab.
  5. In the long list of checkboxes, scroll down and locate “Show shadows under windows.”
  6. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.
  7. Click Apply, then click OK.

A Flat Interface

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the shadow rendering pipeline. Every application window, right-click menu, and system dialog will immediately become perfectly flat, losing the 3D layered effect. By stripping away this unnecessary graphical overhead, your desktop window manager will use significantly less GPU power, resulting in a noticeably snappier and more responsive interface on older hardware.
