The Accidental Illumination
By default, if you are sitting in a dark movie theater or a conference room with your Apple Watch screen turned off, accidentally brushing your hand against the Digital Crown will cause the screen to slowly fade on. Apple designed this “Wake on Crown Rotation” feature so you can discreetly roll the dial upward to gradually brighten the screen and check the time. However, in reality, the physical dial gets bumped against sleeves, desks, and steering wheels constantly, causing the screen to illuminate brightly when you least expect it, draining the battery and drawing unwanted attention. You can easily disable this hardware trigger.
How to Turn Off Screen Wake on Rotation
You can disconnect the physical dial from the screen’s power circuit via the watch settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
- Scroll down to the “Wake” section.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Wake on Crown Rotation.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
The Dark Screen
The change takes effect immediately. You can now aggressively spin the Digital Crown while the screen is black, and absolutely nothing will happen. The screen will remain perfectly dark, completely ignoring the dial. The only way to wake the watch is to explicitly tap the glass screen with your finger or raise your wrist (if you have that gesture enabled).
