How to Disable Optional Diagnostic Data (Telemetry) in Windows 11

The Telemetry Pipeline

Windows 11 is built on a foundation of massive telemetry collection. By default, the operating system sends “Diagnostic Data” to Microsoft. Microsoft divides this into two tiers: “Required” (which sends basic hardware info and error codes) and “Optional.” The “Optional” tier is highly invasive. It allows Microsoft to collect data about the websites you browse, how you use specific applications, enhanced error logs, and detailed device activity. If you view your operating system as a private local environment and refuse to act as an unpaid beta tester for Microsoft’s engineering teams, you must shut down this secondary telemetry pipeline.

How to Disable Optional Diagnostic Data

You can permanently restrict the telemetry engine to its absolute minimum via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. In the main window, click on Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. At the top of the menu, locate the section labeled Diagnostic data and click the arrow to expand it.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Send optional diagnostic data.”
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

Minimum Required Logging Only

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the secondary telemetry collection daemons. The operating system is now legally and technically barred from recording your browsing habits, app usage patterns, or extended crash logs. While Microsoft still forces the collection of “Required” security data, disabling the Optional tier guarantees that the most invasive behavioral tracking features of Windows 11 are completely paralyzed.
