The Unique Identifier
Windows 11 assigns every user account a unique cryptographic string known as an “Advertising ID.” Similar to the tracking cookies used by web browsers, this ID is designed to track your behavior across different desktop applications. Microsoft provides this ID to app developers so they can build a centralized profile of your app usage, allowing them to serve you highly targeted, personalized advertisements directly within Windows Store apps. For users who demand absolute privacy and refuse to be commodified by the operating system, this tracking bridge must be destroyed.
How to Disable the Advertising ID
You can permanently sever the operating system’s ability to broadcast your tracking profile via the Privacy settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
- Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on General.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled “Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID.”
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
Absolute App Anonymity
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely zero out your cryptographic tracking string. The operating system will sever the API bridge that allows third-party developers to query your profile. When you open a free app from the Microsoft Store, the application will be completely blind to your past behavior and unable to correlate your usage with other installed software. Any advertisements displayed will be completely generic and mathematically untethered from your personal hardware profile, guaranteeing a significantly more private desktop environment.
