How to Change Your Wallpaper in Windows 11

The Aesthetic Environment Vector

By default, Windows 11 ships with a highly stylized, abstract blue “bloom” wallpaper. While visually striking, staring at the exact same default image for eight hours a day can become monotonous. The desktop wallpaper is the foundational aesthetic of your digital workspace, and customizing it with a high-resolution photograph or a calming gradient can significantly improve your daily computing experience.

How to Change Your Wallpaper

Windows 11 centralizes all visual customization within the Personalization matrix, allowing you to instantly swap images without rebooting.

1. Right-click on any empty, blank space on your current desktop background.
2. From the context menu, select Personalize. (This will instantly launch the Settings app directly into the correct menu).
3. In the main pane, click on the large Background button.
4. Look at the dropdown menu labelled Personalize your background. Ensure it is set to Picture.
5. Below this dropdown, you will see a “Recent images” section containing several alternative default wallpapers provided by Microsoft. Clicking any of them will instantly apply it.
6. To use your own image: Click the Browse photos button located below the recent images.
7. A standard file explorer window will open. Navigate to the folder where you saved your downloaded image, select it, and click Choose picture.

The operating system will instantly update your desktop. If the image does not perfectly fit your monitor’s aspect ratio, use the “Choose a fit for your desktop image” dropdown menu at the bottom of the page and select Fill to ensure no black bars appear on the edges.
