How to Turn Off AirDrop on a Mac

AirDrop is an incredibly convenient feature that allows Apple devices to transfer massive files, photos, and videos to one another over a secure, ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection. When AirDrop is set to “Everyone,” anyone in your physical vicinity (like at a coffee shop or in a library) can see your Mac’s name and attempt to send you files.

While macOS will always prompt you to accept or decline the transfer before saving the file, constantly receiving unsolicited memes or spam requests from strangers is annoying. Furthermore, broadcasting your Mac’s presence in a public space can be a minor privacy concern. You can easily restrict AirDrop to your contacts, or turn it off entirely to remain completely invisible.

Method 1: Using the Control Center (The Fastest Way)

Apple moved the primary AirDrop controls to the Control Center in modern versions of macOS, making it accessible from any screen without opening the main settings.

1. Look at the top-right corner of your Mac screen, in the menu bar.
2. Click the Control Center icon (it looks like two small toggle switches, just left of the date).
3. Click on the word AirDrop (do not click the icon itself, click the text).
4. A sub-menu will appear with three options:
   • Contacts Only: Only people who are physically saved in your Mac/iPhone Contacts app can see your laptop.
   • Everyone: Anyone within 30 feet can see your laptop and send files.
5. To turn AirDrop completely off, toggle the master switch at the top of this sub-menu to the OFF position.

Your Mac is now completely invisible to the AirDrop network. No one, not even your own iPhone, can send files to the Mac until you turn it back on.

Method 2: Using the Finder (The Traditional Way)

If you are using an older version of macOS (like Catalina or earlier), or if you simply prefer using the file manager, you can control AirDrop directly from the Finder sidebar.

1. Open a new Finder window (click the smiling Mac face icon in your dock).
2. Look at the left-hand sidebar. Under the “Favorites” section, click on AirDrop.
3. The main Finder window will change to display the AirDrop radar screen.

Method 3: Using System Settings (macOS Ventura and Later)

If you want to manage AirDrop alongside your other core system features, you can find the toggle deep within the System Settings.

1. Click the Apple Logo () > System Settings.
2. Scroll down the left sidebar and click on General.
3. In the right panel, click on AirDrop & Handoff.
4. Look for the dropdown menu labeled AirDrop.
5. Click the menu and change the setting from “Everyone” or “Contacts Only” to No One.

Why Is AirDrop Automatically Turning Off?

If you constantly set your AirDrop to “Everyone,” but you notice it automatically reverts to “Contacts Only” ten minutes later, your Mac is not broken. This is an intentional security feature.

Apple implemented a 10-minute time limit for the “Everyone” setting in recent iOS and macOS updates. This is designed to prevent people from accidentally leaving their devices open to public transfers indefinitely. If you need to receive a file from a stranger, you must manually turn it to “Everyone,” receive the file, and the Mac will automatically lock the door behind them ten minutes later.
