How to Disable Auto-Play Video Previews in the iPhone App Store

The Distracting App Store

When you open the App Store on an iPhone to read the description of a new game or productivity app, you are often greeted by a massive video trailer spanning the entire top half of the screen. By default, iOS automatically begins playing these videos the moment they scroll into view. Not only is the sudden motion highly distracting when you are simply trying to read the text reviews, but these high-definition videos also consume a significant amount of cellular data if you are browsing while away from Wi-Fi. If you prefer a quiet, static browsing experience, you must disable the auto-play functionality.

How to Turn Off Auto-Play Videos in the App Store

Apple allows you to control this specific App Store behavior from the main iOS settings menu.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main list until you find App Store. Tap it.
  3. Scroll down to the section labeled “Video AutoPlay.”
  4. Tap on Video AutoPlay to open the menu options.
  5. You will see three choices: “On,” “Wi-Fi Only,” and “Off.”
  6. Tap Off to place a blue checkmark next to it.

The Static Result

The change takes effect immediately. The next time you open the App Store and view an application’s page, the video trailer will appear as a normal, static image with a standard “Play” button icon overlaid on top of it. The video will never consume your cellular data or distract your eyes unless you explicitly choose to tap the play button to watch it.
