How to Change Your Default Browser in Windows 11

The Edge Imposition Vector

Microsoft heavily integrates its native Edge browser into the core fabric of Windows 11. By default, any hyperlink you click within a PDF, a third-party email client, or a system widget will automatically launch Edge, regardless of whether you have installed Chrome or Firefox. Microsoft designed the Windows 11 settings specifically to make abandoning Edge a complex, multi-step process, rather than a simple one-click toggle.

How to Change Your Default Browser

You must dive into the Default Apps matrix and manually reassign the critical web protocols (HTTP and HTTPS) to your preferred application.

1. Open the Start Menu and click the Settings gear icon (or press the Windows Key + I).
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Apps.
3. In the main pane, click on Default apps.
4. You will see a search bar titled “Set a default for a file type or link type.” Ignore this. Instead, scroll down the long list of installed applications until you find your preferred browser (e.g., Google Chrome). Click on it.
5. (Note: In older builds of Windows 11, you had to manually change dozens of individual file types. In modern builds, Microsoft restored a master button.)
6. Look at the very top of the Chrome settings page. You will see a banner stating “Make Google Chrome your default browser.”
7. Click the Set default button located on the right side of that banner.

Verify the change by looking at the list below the button. The .htm, .html, HTTP, and HTTPS protocols should all now display the Chrome icon, confirming that Edge has been successfully bypassed for all standard web browsing tasks.
