Why Bypass the Lock Screen?
If you are the only person using your computer and you keep it in a secure location, such as a home office, entering a password or PIN every single time you turn it on can become tedious. By default, Windows 11 requires authentication to protect your data. However, if physical security is not a concern for your specific setup, you can configure Windows to automatically log in to your account, bypassing the lock screen entirely and booting straight to your desktop. This saves time and provides a smoother, uninterrupted start to your day.
How to Use netplwiz to Auto-Login
The easiest way to set up automatic login is by using a hidden user accounts utility called netplwiz. Note: This method works best if you are using a local account. If you are using a Microsoft account linked to Windows Hello (PIN, Fingerprint, or Face ID), you may need to disable Windows Hello first for the option to appear.
- Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
- Type
netplwizinto the text field and press Enter. This opens the User Accounts window. - Look for a checkbox at the top that says “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.”
- Uncheck this box. (If you do not see this box, see the troubleshooting section below).
- Click the Apply button at the bottom of the window.
- A new dialog box will appear titled “Automatically sign in.” You must enter your exact Windows username and your current password twice to confirm.
- Click OK on the Automatically sign in box, and then click OK on the User Accounts window.
The next time you restart your computer, Windows 11 will bypass the lock screen and take you directly to your desktop.
Troubleshooting: Missing Checkbox in netplwiz
In modern versions of Windows 11, Microsoft hides the password requirement checkbox if you have “Windows Hello Sign-in” enabled. You must disable this security feature to reveal the checkbox.
- Open the Settings app by pressing Windows Key + I.
- Navigate to Accounts on the left sidebar.
- Click on Sign-in options.
- Scroll down to the “Additional settings” section.
- Look for the option that says: “For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device (Recommended).”
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
Once you have turned this setting off, close the Settings app, press Windows Key + R, and run netplwiz again. The missing checkbox will now be available, allowing you to configure automatic login.
