Fast Startup is a built-in feature in Windows 11 designed to drastically reduce the amount of time it takes your computer to boot up from a completely powered-off state. When this feature is enabled, choosing “Shut Down” from the Start menu does not actually perform a complete, cold shutdown. Instead, Windows closes all your open applications and logs you out, but it saves the core operating system state (the kernel and loaded drivers) into a hibernation file on your hard drive. When you press the power button the next day, Windows simply loads that file back into RAM, allowing you to reach the login screen in seconds.
Why You Might Want to Disable Fast Startup
While a faster boot time sounds strictly beneficial, Fast Startup can cause significant problems in certain scenarios. You may need to disable it if:
- Dual Booting: If you run Linux alongside Windows 11 on the same hard drive, Fast Startup locks the Windows partition. This prevents your Linux installation from reading or writing to the Windows drive.
- Driver Updates: Because the system kernel is never truly shut down and restarted, certain stubborn driver updates or Windows Updates might fail to install correctly until a true cold boot is performed.
- BIOS/UEFI Access: On some extremely fast motherboards, Fast Startup skips the initial hardware initialization screen so quickly that it becomes physically impossible to press the key required to enter the BIOS settings.
How to Change the Fast Startup Setting
Interestingly, Microsoft has not moved this specific setting into the modern Windows 11 Settings app. You must use the legacy Control Panel to change it.
- Click the Start button, type Control Panel into the search bar, and press Enter.
- In the top right corner of the Control Panel window, change the “View by” setting from Category to Large icons or Small icons.
- Find and click on Power Options.
- Look at the navigation menu on the left side of the window and click the link that says Choose what the power buttons do.
Unlocking the Greyed-Out Settings
You will now see the “Turn on fast startup (recommended)” checkbox near the bottom of the window. However, the box will likely be greyed out, preventing you from clicking it. This is a security measure to prevent standard users from altering core system boot behaviors.
- Look near the top of the window for a shield icon next to blue text that reads: Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Click that text. If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), click Yes to grant administrator privileges.
- The checkboxes at the bottom of the window will now be unlocked and clickable.
- Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup to disable the feature, or check it to enable it.
- Click the Save changes button at the absolute bottom of the window.
The next time you shut down your PC, Windows will perform a true, complete cold shutdown.
