When presenting complex business strategies, academic research, or technical roadmaps, tailoring your slide deck to the audience is essential. You may have detailed financial appendix slides, extra case studies, or backup calculation models that are only relevant if someone asks a specific question during Q&A. Rather than maintaining multiple separate presentation files, Microsoft PowerPoint allows you to hide specific slides so they are skipped during your slide show while remaining fully accessible inside your working deck.
Hiding a Slide in PowerPoint Normal View
To hide one or more slides while editing your deck in Microsoft PowerPoint:
- Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
- In the left-hand slide thumbnail pane, locate the slide you want to omit from the live presentation.
- Right-click the slide thumbnail and select Hide Slide from the contextual menu. Alternatively, click the slide and select Slide Show from the top ribbon, then click Hide Slide.
Once hidden, PowerPoint renders a diagonal slash through the slide number in the thumbnail pane and dims the thumbnail preview, indicating that the slide will not appear during linear presentation playback.
Hiding Multiple Slides Simultaneously
If you need to suppress an entire section of appendix slides:
- In the left thumbnail pane or Slide Sorter view (View > Slide Sorter), click the first slide you want to hide.
- Hold down Shift and click the last slide in the sequence to select contiguous slides. Hold down Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) to select non-adjacent slides.
- Right-click any selected thumbnail and click Hide Slide.
How to Access Hidden Slides During a Live Presentation
If an audience member asks a question that requires your hidden backup slides, you do not need to exit presentation mode or unhide the slide beforehand:
- While in active Slide Show view or Presenter View, right-click anywhere on the screen.
- Select See All Slides (or press the grid icon in Presenter View).
- All slides will display as a grid. Hidden slides appear with a crossed-out number box.
- Click the hidden slide. PowerPoint will immediately transition to that slide for the audience.
- When you advance to the next slide, PowerPoint returns to your normal slide sequence.
Unhiding Slides in PowerPoint
To restore hidden slides so they display automatically in future presentations, right-click the dimmed thumbnail in the left pane and click Hide Slide again to toggle the suppression off.
