In the era of remote work and virtual presentations, simply sharing your screen over Zoom or Microsoft Teams creates a disconnect with your audience. They stare at static slides while you become a tiny, easily ignored thumbnail in the corner of their screen.
To solve this, Microsoft introduced a feature called Cameo. Cameo allows you to embed your live webcam feed directly onto your PowerPoint slides, treating your camera exactly like a picture or a shape. You can apply filters, crop your video into circles or stars, and integrate yourself seamlessly into the presentation design.
How to Insert a Cameo Feed
Cameo requires a Microsoft 365 subscription and a functional webcam connected to your computer.
- Open your presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Select the slide where you want your camera feed to appear.
- Click the Insert tab on the top ribbon menu.
- Look towards the far right of the ribbon and click the button labelled Cameo (it looks like a small video camera icon).
A placeholder box representing your camera feed will immediately appear on the slide. You will likely see a dark silhouette icon inside the box, indicating the camera is currently turned off.
Customising the Camera Appearance
Because PowerPoint treats the Cameo feed exactly like any other graphic element, you have complete control over how it looks.
- Click the Cameo placeholder box to select it.
- A new Camera Format tab will appear in the top ribbon menu.
- Change the Shape: Under the Camera Format tab, click Camera Shape to crop your video feed into a circle, a rounded rectangle, a hexagon, or any other standard shape.
- Add Effects: You can apply borders, drop shadows, or soft edges to your video feed using the Camera Styles gallery.
- Move and Resize: Click and drag the Cameo box to place it anywhere on the slide (for example, tucking it into a blank corner so it does not block your text). Use the corner handles to make your video feed larger or smaller.
How to Turn on the Camera
While you are designing your slides, your camera remains off to save battery and processing power. To preview what your audience will actually see, you need to activate the feed.
- Click the Cameo placeholder box.
- A small icon featuring a camera with a slash through it will appear directly below the box.
- Click that icon to turn the camera on.
Your live webcam feed will immediately populate the shape you designed. You can leave it on while you present, or toggle it off if you need privacy.
Presenting with Cameo
When you are ready to deliver your presentation to an audience, you do not need to do anything special. Simply click the Slide Show button as you normally would.
As soon as you transition to a slide containing a Cameo object, your webcam will automatically activate, and you will appear integrated directly into the slide deck for anyone watching in the room or over a video call.
