For decades, presentation software has forced users into a rigid, linear structure. You start on Slide 1, press the spacebar to move to Slide 2, and continue in a straight line until the end. If an audience member asks a question about a previous topic, you are forced to rapidly click backwards through ten different slides to find the relevant information, disrupting the entire flow of the meeting.
Microsoft PowerPoint solved this problem with the Slide Zoom feature. Slide Zoom allows you to create a dynamic, interactive “menu” slide that acts as a dashboard. Instead of moving in a straight line, you can click on miniature thumbnail images to instantly jump to different sections of your presentation in any order, similar to how the web-based software Prezi operates.
How to Set Up Your Presentation
Before you can use Slide Zoom effectively, your presentation needs some basic structure. This feature works best if you divide your slideshow into logical sections.
- Open your PowerPoint presentation.
- Look at the thumbnail pane on the left side of the screen.
- Right-click in the space exactly where you want a new section to begin (e.g., between Slide 3 and Slide 4).
- Select Add Section from the menu. Name this section clearly (e.g., “Financial Results” or “Marketing Strategy”).
- Repeat this process to divide your entire presentation into distinct, named chapters.
How to Insert a Slide Zoom
Now that your presentation is structured, you can create the interactive menu dashboard.
- Create a blank new slide near the beginning of your presentation. This will act as your main dashboard.
- Click the Insert tab in the top ribbon menu.
- In the “Links” group, click Zoom.
- Select Section Zoom from the dropdown menu.
A dialogue box will appear displaying the first slide of every section you created earlier.
- Click the checkboxes next to the sections you want to feature on your dashboard slide.
- Click Insert.
Customising the Zoom Thumbnails
PowerPoint will place miniature, clickable thumbnail images of your chosen slides onto your blank dashboard slide. You can now treat these thumbnails just like regular images.
- Click and drag the thumbnails to arrange them in a circle, a grid, or any layout that suits your design.
- Click on a thumbnail, then click the newly appeared Zoom tab in the top ribbon menu to customise its appearance (e.g., adding drop shadows, changing the border thickness, or even replacing the thumbnail image entirely with an icon).
How Slide Zoom Operates During a Presentation
When you enter Presentation Mode (press F5), the magic happens.
When you reach your dashboard slide, you can use your mouse to click on any of the thumbnail images in any order. The camera will smoothly “zoom” into that specific slide with a cinematic animation. You can then continue clicking the spacebar to progress through the slides in that specific section.
Crucially, when you reach the end of that section, PowerPoint will automatically “zoom out” and return you to the main dashboard slide. You can then click a different thumbnail to jump into a completely different topic based on where the conversation naturally leads, entirely breaking free from linear constraints.
