How to Split a Cell in Excel

If you want to un-merge cells or divide data, Excel has several tools to accomplish this.

Splitting Cells

  1. If the cell is merged, click it, go to the Home tab, and click Merge & Center again to un-merge it.
  2. If you want to split the actual text (like “John Smith”), select the cell.
  3. Go to the Data tab and click Text to Columns.
  4. Follow the wizard to split the data by spaces or commas into adjacent cells.
