How to Loop a Specific Video Chapter on YouTube

Whether you are learning a difficult guitar chord progression, revising an intricate software coding tutorial, mastering an exercise routine, or listening to your favourite song segment in a long soundtrack compilation, repeating a single section of a video is often essential. While YouTube has long offered a global video loop toggle that restarts the entire video from the beginning, many users do not realise that YouTube also includes a dedicated chapter-looping tool built directly into the video player on both desktop and mobile devices.

How YouTube Video Chapter Looping Works

Content creators break longer videos into timestamped chapters to make content easily browsable. When a video contains structured chapters along the progress bar, YouTube’s player allows you to isolate and repeat any individual segment indefinitely. When chapter loop is active, the video plays to the end of that specific timestamped boundary, then seamlessly rewinds back to the exact start of the chapter without restarting the whole upload or requiring third-party browser extensions.

Method 1: Looping a Specific Chapter on Desktop (Web Browser)

To loop an individual chapter using the desktop YouTube interface:

  1. Open your web browser, navigate to YouTube, and play any video that contains chapters.
  2. Hover your cursor over the video player to display the playback controls.
  3. Click on the Chapter title displayed immediately to the right of the current timestamp in the bottom-left corner of the video. Alternatively, click the View chapters button located on the right side of the control bar or beneath the video description.
  4. A vertical chapters panel will open on the right-hand side of the video, showing thumbnail previews and start times for each section.
  5. Locate the specific chapter you want to repeat.
  6. Hover over that chapter’s row. A small Loop icon (consisting of two circular arrows) will appear next to the chapter duration.
  7. Click the Loop icon. The icon will illuminate or display a filled indicator to confirm that chapter looping is engaged.

The player will now continuously repeat that chapter until you click the loop icon again to release it.

Method 2: Looping a Specific Chapter on Mobile (Android and iPhone)

You can also loop specific sections using the official YouTube mobile app:

  1. Open the YouTube app on your Android device or iPhone and start playing your video.
  2. Tap the screen to reveal the on-screen overlays, then tap the Chapter title visible above the red playback progress bar.
  3. The full chapters menu slides up from the bottom of your screen.
  4. Find the chapter you wish to repeat continuously.
  5. Tap the Loop button (the circular arrows icon) located beside the chapter entry.
  6. Close the chapters drawer. When playback reaches the end of the selected segment, it will instantly jump back to the beginning of that chapter automatically.

Tips for Videos Without Creator Chapters

If you are watching an older video or an upload where the creator did not configure chapters:

  • Use Keyboard Shortcuts for Quick Rewinds: On desktop browsers, pressing J rewinds 10 seconds, while pressing the Left Arrow key rewinds 5 seconds.
  • Create a Custom Loop via YouTube Clips: Click the Clip button beneath the video title, drag the start and end sliders to define your exact segment (up to 60 seconds), and share or bookmark the clip URL to loop that snippet.
  • Adjust Playback Speed: If you are analysing intricate tutorials, click the Settings (cogwheel) icon > Playback speed to slow playback down to 0.75x or 0.5x during the looped chapter for greater comprehension.
